C3 Fiji Joins Kia Watchtower and Ligau Solar Freezer Handing Over Ceremony

C3 Fiji had the honor of participating in the Handing Over Ceremony for the Kia Watchtower and Ligau Solar Freezer, officiated by the Minister of Fisheries and Forests, Hon. Kalaveti Ravu.

The three villages on Kia Island were the initial communities for C3 Fiji, where the organization operated for five years before relocating to Labasa. C3 Fiji played a crucial role in the initial phase of this project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries, C3 Fiji has been actively addressing the impact of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, specifically around the Great Sea Reef (GSR) near Kia waters. IUU fishing is a global issue that poses significant threats to ocean ecosystems and sustainable fisheries. The establishment of the Kia Watchtower is a significant step towards addressing these challenges and protecting the marine resources of the region.

Mangrove Restoration

Our mangrove restoration prorgamme is a continuous and community-driven initiative. With active participation from local communities, we have successfully planted 14,830 mangrove saplings, and we are currently nurturing over 15,000 propagules. These achievements are made possible through generous support from the European Union (EU), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the ongoing KIWA (IUCN) program.

The collaborative efforts is a holistic approach to environmental conservation and community development. We are not only safeguarding biodiversity but also enhancing the well-being and resilience of our coastal communities.

Issue of Fish Warden Licenses

In addition to the monitoring of the LMMA, the Fish Wardens will now possess complete authority to hold accountable individuals engaged in illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and among other responsibilities.

Wardens were also issued critical equipment required to implement their work. A pair of rain suits and camouflaged vests per person, complemented by one Toshiba torch, was allocated to each community to assist them in carrying out their monitoring tasks.

C3 Global Strategic Planning Workshop: Charting the Future of Community Conservation

C3 (Community Centred Conservation) recently held a pivotal Strategic Planning Workshop at its global headquarters in England. Senior officials from C3 branches in Fiji, Madagascar, and the Philippines convened with C3 Global Directors for a two-week intensive session focused on steering the organization’s future and strengthening its role as a leader in environmental conservation for underserved communities.

During the workshop, the team developed their new strategic plans (2024-2029), reaffirming C3’s vision and mission. This gathering provided a platform to reassess organizational strengths, address challenges, and devise effective strategies for ongoing and future projects. A key focus was the collaborative review of current projects and formulating plans to ensure their successful completion.

Networking sessions were a highlight, fostering an environment of learning and sharing best practices among the branches. This exchange of ideas and experiences enriched the team’s approach to conservation.

C3 Fiji, represented by its Director and Senior Technical Officer, played a significant role in the workshop. They formulated a robust plan to finalize the ongoing KIWA project and strategized to extend their outreach to more communities in Vanua Levu. By leveraging the insights and strategies from the workshop, C3 Fiji aims to enhance its human and technical resources to better serve local communities.

This strategic workshop marks a crucial step forward for C3, as it continues to innovate and expand its conservation efforts globally, reaching more communities and driving impactful environmental change.
