C3 began working to conserve dugongs on Busuanga in 2011 in partnership with the University of the Philippines, local authorities and community associations. The first step was research:
Where are the dugongs?
Which are their preferred feeding areas?
What are the current threats?
What can local people do to help protect them?
We completed an intensive year of research, interviewing fishers and mapping seagrass beds as well as conducting in-water observations of the animals. No scientific surveys had been conducted for twenty years so this information was vital to inform appropriate conservation action.
