BUSUANGA, Palawan – Last 10 April 2014, C3 Philippines conducted the first Busuanga Dugong Conservation Workshop: Presentation of the initial results of our Dugong dugon survey in the legislative building of Busuanga Municipality. It was conducted in partnership with the local government of Busuanga, and was attended by different partners and stakeholders such as community partners, barangay officials, local government officials, dive shop owners and other partners from non-profit organizations.
The event started with an overview of C3 Philippines and its programs and an overview of Philippine biodiversity and its status, threats and future, especially in relation to the coastal and marine biodiversity. C3 then presented the current status threats and future of Dugong dugon in the global and local context, before proceeding to the presentation of initial results of C3’s dugong research in the Philippines since 2011.
The stakeholder participants developed a SWOT analysis of dugong conservation in the municipality and also drafted recommendations and a plan of action for the dugong conservation project, with local government officials even committing to legislate future management systems and plans for dugong conservation and protection.
