BUSUANGA, Palawan – C3 Philippines Field Staff completed their Open Water Training Course from Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) last 13 December 2014 with Neptune Dive Center in Coron Municipality. The Field Staff trained included: Programme Officer Archie Espinosa, Programme Assistants Shalom Pareja and Josefievienie Badang.
The field staff underwent the 3-day training, including underwater identification of various species in preparation for more extensive surveys of critical underwater habitats around Northern Palawan, such as seagrass and corals.
This training was made possible through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources project, which tapped C3 Philippines to assist with the dugong and pawikan population/habitat survey in the Calamianes Group of Islands.
Earlier this year, Senior Programme Officer Danica Lopez completed her Rescue Diver and Dive Master Training from Technical Diving International-Scuba Diving International (TDI-SDI) last August 2014 with Dugong Dive Center. This training was to ensure safe conduct of underwater surveys, especially by visiting researchers. Prior this she has already had experience in Reef Check surveys, in which she participated in Southern Leyte last year, August 2013, in order to begin training for coral reef assessment methods.
More extensive seagrass habitat assessments are expected to take place early January of 2015, in partnership with the Keidanren Nature Conservation Foundation and the Seagrass Bioshield Project with Dr. Miguel D. Fortes.
