C3 partners with the Convention on Migratory Species

We are working with the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) to improve scientific knowledge of dugong populations in the Western Indian Ocean.  We will investigate historical changes in populations on the islands of Mauritius and Madagascar.  The dugong is thought to be extinct on Mauritius, although fishermen often hear rumours of sightings in the island’s waters, we will work with expert fishers throughout the island to examine these stories in more detail.  In Madagascar, we will focus our work on the northern region of the island to examine the historical decline of dugongs and seagrass habitat from GIS analysis, field surveys and fisher interviews.
